Leave your worries behind as you dance your way into fitness with a new, low-impact Intro to Zumba class at Westbury UMC.
Join us on Wednesday nights, starting May 1, from 7:30 to 8:30 pm in Humphrey Hall (the gym near the main entrance). Taught by a certified Zumba instructor, no dance experience is necessary; just wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes. Voluntary donations to help cover AC costs are expected of class participants, as they are able to give.
The Latin-inspired program appeals to many people internationally who are looking for a fun fitness routine. That's how Carlyn Chatfield ended up becoming a Zumba instructor.
"Through music and dance, Zumba allows me to vacation in a lot of different countries without ever leaving my neighborhood," says Carlyn.
"I can hear my heels clacking out a Tango in Spain and feel the bumpy streets of Columbia when I dig into the Cumbia. Puerto Rican street dancers are all around me when I am stomping out the Reggaeton, and I am splashing on a Jamaican beach when I'm bouncing along to Calypso songs."
In addition to the convenience of having a fitness class offered right in the Westbury neighborhood, Carlyn had another reason for choosing the location.
"I wanted to teach at Westbury UMC because the church is so diverse: so many cultures, so many languages! Westbury Methodist is a natural fit for Zumba's incredible diversity of music and dance."
Everyone trying out the class can simply go at their own pace. It's intended to be a basic introduction to Zumba.
"No judging yourself," Carlyn encourages. "No comparing yourself to the person in front of or beside you. It's your one-hour vacation, so enjoy it! If you want to spend 60 minutes just walking in place to our fun music, go right ahead."
