Summer enrichment through Freedom Schools program

Summer enrichment through Freedom Schools program

Freedom SchoolsFreedom Schools, created by the Children’s Defense Fund, provide summer enrichment in a nurturing environment that helps children gain confidence and enthusiasm for reading and learning.

Westbury UMC will host a Freedom Schools program for six weeks, June 24–August 2, from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm each weekday. We will work with a director, Jimmy Robertson, who has been trained by Freedom Schools, seven interns from Duke Divinity School, St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and Gethsemane UMC to offer this exciting opportunity to 50 children in our community.

The students will have classroom instruction from 9:00 until 11:45 am, Monday through Thursday and educational programs and field trips in the afternoon as well as each Friday. On the last day of the program, August 2, Westbury UMC will host a Celebratory Finale for the students and their parents. This is a time for them to showcase what they have learned.

This is a free program for the students. Download a student enrollment form (pdf).
